The Cyprian Ekwensi Center for Arts and Culture is a government-managed arts and cultural complex located in Iddo-Sarki, Area Council, Garki, Abuja, Nigeria. Named after the renowned Nigerian novelist Cyprian Ekwensi, it serves as a key venue for promoting artistic expression and cultural heritage within the Federal Capital Territory.
Established to foster creativity and cultural exchange, the center originally operated as the Arts and Culture Complex before being renamed in honor of Ekwensi. It has long functioned as the headquarters of the FCT Department of Arts and Culture and the FCT Tourism Board, offering facilities for exhibitions, festivals, and performance events that gather artists and cultural practitioners from across Nigeria.
The complex includes performance halls, galleries, and meeting spaces for visual and performing arts. It hosts art exhibitions, cultural festivals, and creative workshops, serving as a meeting point for Abuja’s artistic community. Over time, however, parts of the facility have been repurposed for administrative use, sparking debate among residents and artists about its preservation as a cultural landmark.
In 2023, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) converted portions of the center into offices under the Social Development Secretariat, a move that drew criticism from cultural stakeholders who saw it as undermining Abuja’s creative infrastructure. Subsequent reports highlighted declining maintenance of the theatre hall and calls for government action to restore the center’s artistic mission.
Despite operational challenges, the Cyprian Ekwensi Center remains a symbolic home of Abuja’s artistic identity—a hub where writers, performers, and visual artists continue to engage the city’s evolving cultural scene.
